Choosing a 4G Security Camera: SIM Cards, Solar Power and Installation
How can you check a farm, construction site, warehouse perimeter or detached property without fixed broadband? A 4G security camera can transmit video through a cellular network where deploying Wi-Fi is impractical. A useful procurement decision considers connectivity, power, recording and operating costs together, rather than lens count alone.
Does a 4G camera need Wi-Fi?
A camera with an integrated LTE modem can connect using a compatible SIM and data service. It still needs suitable cellular coverage: no Wi-Fi does not mean no network. Confirm the cellular version, since a similar enclosure may also be sold as a Wi-Fi model.
Applications to evaluate
- Farms and detached properties: check signal at the mounting position and define the scene before planning power and panel placement.
- Construction and temporary sites: consider relocation, secure mounting, data charges and user access.
- Warehouses and entrances: define the area to observe and the required remote viewing and playback workflow.
- Multiple directions: check each stream and its field of view. More lenses do not establish blind-spot-free coverage.
Six checks before ordering
- LTE and SIM: match country, operator and hardware version; confirm camera use is permitted by the plan and check activation/APN requirements.
- Power: distinguish mains, rechargeable battery and solar packages. Confirm included panels, batteries, cables and brackets. Solar charging is not a promise of maintenance-free, unlimited operation.
- Recording: verify event recording, continuous recording, pre-recording and AOV separately, including frame rate, wake-up behavior and conditions for each stream.
- Image quality: confirm actual per-stream resolution, viewing angle, zoom method and night samples. Combined megapixels are not single-stream resolution; promotional images are not field tests.
- Storage and app: check card support, overwrite behavior, playback/export and cloud or app charges. Mobile connectivity, cloud storage and local recording are separate requirements.
- Installation and delivery: confirm environmental suitability, temperatures, protection documentation, mounting hardware, software languages and firmware maintenance. Confirm compliance and OEM scope per model.
Can a solar camera record continuously?
That depends on the model and complete power system. Consider local sunlight, shading, season and recording load. Remote viewing, alerts and illumination also affect consumption. Request confirmation of the recording mode, frame rate and power configuration; a solar panel alone is not proof of continuous recording capability.
Planning data costs
Remote live viewing and video uploads use mobile data. Evaluate upload bitrate, viewing duration, events and cloud settings, then check actual operator billing with a sample. As a mathematical reference, 1 Mbps uploaded for one hour is about 450 MB of video data in decimal units, before overhead. This is not a model-specific allowance or guarantee. Local recording should not be confused with uploading it to the cloud.
Frequently asked questions
Are the SIM plan and cloud storage one charge?
Confirm them separately, including provider, subscription fees and what remains available after expiry. Do not assume everything is free or included.
What about a weak-signal location?
Test the proposed camera and local SIM at the actual position, including uploads, viewing, alerts and reconnection. Extra lenses or a solar panel cannot replace cellular coverage.
What should I send ZAPO?
Country/operator, site conditions, observation area, power, recording/storage needs and quantity. ZAPO is a brand of Shenzhen Jiebo Technology Co., Ltd., focused on wireless networking and smart security. Bands, app, compliance documents and supplied configuration require model and sample confirmation.
